Los Angeles, CA, USA
I am Shirin Sadri, originally from Tehran, Iran, and in 2017, I relocated to Los Angeles and immersed myself in the art world. After earning my Associate of Arts degree in Fine Art at Santa Monica College, I pursued a Bachelor's Degree in Studio Art at San Diego State University. During my time at SDSU, I discovered my passion for jewelry and metalsmithing. This educational journey has ignited a deep interest in working with diverse materials, including metals, ceramics, and wood. My creative output contains pieces that exude not only visual appeal but also serve functional purposes and carry political/personal narratives, reflecting my commitment to meaningfully contributing to the art world.
“Through this artwork, I articulate the profound narrative of personal evolution and resilience. Confronting the loss of my father amidst the exploration of my sexual identity and relocation from Iran to the United States, this piece encapsulates my journey. A symbolic ring, it signifies the discovery of purpose, the pursuit of happiness across borders, and the acceptance of my father's absence. It serves as a visual testament to embracing both my geographical and emotional transitions, finding strength in vulnerability, and proudly affirming my identity as a queer individual.”
How does your work relate to the theme transformation— How does the work translate joy into strength?
"My artistic expression delves into the intricate theme of transformation, incorporating a narrative that translates the emotions of loss, self-discovery, and acceptance into a compelling tale of failings and finding strength and joy in life again. Central to this narrative is a symbolic ring, its circular form mirroring the perpetual cycle of personal evolution. Polished sections represent transformative moments of purpose, identity, and joy. The top part's Shininess represents positivity and symbolizes happiness and resilience. My artwork summarizes the journey of transmuting personal challenges into strength and joy, offering a visual testament to resilience, self-discovery, and the transformative power of embracing one's identity."
