Grey Von Cannon is a multidisciplinary artist based in Charlottesville, VA where she works as a studio artist. She holds a BFA in Metalsmithing and Painting from Appalachian State University where she began collaborating with painting and metalsmithing to create succinct works of art. She unites fragile sculptures with raw, expressive paintings to explore vulnerability, home and identity.
“This piece exists in the liminal space between adornment and sculpture, encouraging the wearer to embody the art. The orange is often featured in my work as a subject to portray the fleshy, sensual aspects of the human form. Copper foil and enamel, respectively fragile, unite to form a strong bond much like an orange peel while paint fills the crevices and folds like orange juice.”
How does your work relate to the theme transformation— How does the work translate joy into strength?
""Peel" explores the constant seeking and discovering that keeps me afloat. Creating large, sculptural pieces out of unexpected materials is a small way to proclaim who I am. I've always felt transformed by earrings as they've served as a calling card and immediately give me confidence and comfort."
Anything else you would like to share about this work?
This can be an important part of the process, sourcing materials, or research.
"I approach my process as a painter and lover of objects, so this work was made while working on paintings. Incorporating paint and the color and texture of enamel with copper foil that is manipulated by hand helps me feel grounded when creating adornments."
